Where to Find the Free Video Lunch
I’m still waiting on word from Justin and Chaunna Brooke on the results of the contest.
I got a little wound up over something going on.
The challenge was to create a video on the importance of list building. I submitted an initial video, but a message went out that something was missing. This kind of thing makes me kooky, and I’m sure I’ll be slapping myself silly when I figure it out if I didn’t already.
Anyway, that is not what got me the most wound up. One of the contest entries used some materials that they didn’t have permission to use. I could have just ranted and left it at that, but I actually offered some solutions that this opponent could have used.
When making video on the web, there are tons of ways to be creative without taking materials that aren’t yours to use. Public domain is highly under rated and easily forgotten. It is one of the best kept secrets on the web for those who need something.
I wanted to kick my own head when I realized I could have used public domain for this project. I recently had to use some public domain materials in a political campaign project and it was not only successful, but saved me literally thousands of dollars it would have cost to get the images and clips I needed if I hadn’t been directed to some great resources.
I probably would have done a completely different video if I had thought about it. I’ve seen some footage of JFK and MLK that would have been hysterical when paired up on a speech about list building. Next time I guess.
I had submitted a second video to the contest, but not sure if it got in on time. I really need to go figure out what time zone the Brooke family lives in. I got an email saying there was time left, but I thought it was over all ready, so I took their word for it or thought maybe they decided to extend it a bit further. It wasn’t going to hurt to try.
There is no excuse not to find free materials to make your videos on the web.

I just made a little video last night for Justin Brooke on the importance of list building.
When I started my first list, it was completely in a rush and a panic. I was selling the silly Kimkins diet, and was promoting using adwords. I was paying for every visitor who cam to my site. Silly me, I paid for a lot of people to visit me and didn’t even get their names! I was devistated by this later on – not because of the missed opportunity to build a long term relationship with those folks. I was destroyed when I realized all the additional names I could have emailed to tell them about the scam. I’m confident there were many who I missed, and who for a fact I know did join Kimkins.
I didn’t get a list in place until about the 3rd day into the massive sales. It was put up quickly out of desperation when the main Kimkins site went down several times from the traffic overload. I knew people were clicking on my site, and then clicking to go to KK and they got a “server is busy” message of some kind. I was throwing adspend right down the toilet. I needed to get the names of those people so I could email them when the site went back up. It was a mess.
Anyway, here is my video on the importance of listbuilding. I didn’t go into this dirty story in that video because, well, it’s just complicated.
